Start receiving SMS notification for Gmail via Twitter

Have you ever thought how beneficial it would be for you if you start receiving SMS notifications of important emails on your mobile phone? It would be much easier for you to check what mail you’ve received, and if it is important for you. But, as we all know, Gmail provide no text notification facility, but Twitter does. If we can able to find a connection between Gmail and Twitter accounts, then Gmail notifications will automatically start arriving as SMS on our mobile phone via Twitter. Let’s figure out the way:

Twitter is the only social networking platform that allows people to follow others via a simple SMS. It provides a short code for every country, and if you send a message FOLLOW with any username to this short code, you’ll start receiving tweets from that user in your phone as SMS notifications.

You can use this short code service as a Gmail SMS notifier. To get started, you have to create a Twitter account first, change its privacy settings to private, and this will send a Tweet whenever you receive a new mail in your Gmail account. Simply follow this through your Twitter account, and the SMS notifications will start in your phone.

Detailed Guide to use Twitter as a Gmail Notifier

Here, I am describing a step by step guide you can consider following to use Twitter as a  SMS notifier for all the important mails in your Gmail account:

  • If you are already a registered member of Twitter, just logout it, and create a new Twitter account.
  • Account created? Congo! Now confirm your email ID first, and change your privacy settings to private by checking the option “Protect My Tweets.” This way, no one will be able to see your tweets generated via Gmail.
  • Copy the Google sheet, and authorize your new Twitter account.
  • Once it is done, start the Twitter menu from your Gmail account and enter the Gmail search query. For example, you can enter: unread in: important is: inbox newer_than:1d – this query will help you to receive only important, unread and new email notification in your mobile phones.

And, that’s it. Now, you can go ahead, and start using it for your own. The Gmail notifier run for every 10-15 minutes, and sends a SMS whenever a matching mail is received in your Gmail account. It works only for new mails, not the old ones.
